Digital Citizenship (IMPORTANT)

Hello Families of Room 8 and 9,

We had a discussion in class about digital safety, citizenship,  and respect regarding social media accounts. I have been hearing misuse of certain technology on social media accounts, such as Snap Chat, Twitter, Instagram, and many more. Some students have been engaged in rude behavior with students from room 8 and 9, of threating one another and using bad language (inappropriate words) to each other in online conversations. Please have a chat with your child and CHECK their accounts. If your child cannot manage/handle online social media technology in a respectful manner please think about deleting their accounts.

Respectfully Grade 5 TLC Teacher Ms. Gill

Friday November 22

Hello Room 8 and 9 Families,

Last week and this week we will be learning about the following in each subject:

Math: Space and Shape
-Describe and provide examples of edges and faces of 3-D objects, and sides of 2-D shapes.
-Identify and sort quadrilaterals
-Identify and drawing different lines (parallel, intersecting, perpendicular, verticle and horizontal)
-Identify and describe a single transformation, including a translation, rotation, and reflection of 2-D shapes.
-Identifying and drawing 90-degree angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles.

Language Arts: Persuasive Writing
- Introduction, body with support evidence and conclusion.
-Reading the book Fatty Legs and we are on chapter 6.

Science: Weather and Electricity, if time
-Understand that climate refers to long term weather trends in a particular region and that climate varies throughout the world.
-Recognize that human actions can affect climate, and identify human actions that have been linked to the greenhouse effect.
-Appreciate how important it is to be able to forecast weather and to have suitable clothing or shelter to endure various types of weather.
-Demonstrate different ways of lighting two lights from a single power source, and compare the results. Students should recognize that wiring two bulbs in series makes both bulbs glow less brightly than if the bulbs are wired in parallel. Students may demonstrate this knowledge operationally and do not need to use the terms series and parallel.

Social Studies: Different Regions of Canda
-Review chapter 4 and 5
-Read chapter 6 and answer questions
(all these chapters on the blog)

Basic Fact Fitness, Alberta Regions Slide Presentations, and Crafty Coding!

Even the short weeks have a lot of learning in them! This week we tried to do some more Basic Fact Fitness to get moving throughout the day. The teacher gives us the basic fact (ex. 2x4) and we answer by doing jumping jacks (in this example, we'd do 8). After a few of them, we switch the exercise to try to make sure we're moving many parts of our body! What a great way to learn and move...we should try it at home!

We spent a couple of days working on organizing our Alberta Region Slide Presentation. It's a lot of work getting that many computers to work at the same time! After some frustration and some quick problem solving, we have a good start on some of our presentations. We look forward to sharing them!

We finished the week with something different and completely new to many of the students-coding. Everyone seemed to enjoy coding and had some great ideas! Our classes were so quiet as we worked! I can show you what I've made at home.

It was a great week and now we're set for the next one!

IMPORTANT: Weekly Blogs and Field Trip News...

1. Blog updates as an Agenda 'Replacement'-We are able to see how many people are viewing our teacher blogs and the numbers are low! The purpose of our blog is to provide parents and students with an opportunity to know some of the upcoming events, as well as providing you with things to discuss with your child. We are lucky to spend so much time with your children, we would like you to know what they're up to with us! It is also important that your child has expectations that he/she follows. Since we don't have agendas anymore, reading the blog is an expectation that your child has to help them stay organized.

Thank you for your support and happy reading!

2. Field Trip Change of Expectations-Due to the recent budget, the CBE is facing a funding 'freeze'. This means we are not able to spend ANY money until further notice. This also means that we need to ensure we have appropriate payments made for each student. In order to ensure that we are organized for our field trip, we will be setting a date of Thursday November 21st to make your payment AND to hand the necessary forms in. Those students who have not paid or returned appropriate forms by this date, will be unable to attend.

Thank you!

Perspectives, Appreciation, and Preparation!

This week was a week full of appreciating the things that we have in our lives. We were the hosts for the Remembrance Day assembly and in an effort to show our appreciation, we worked hard to ensure we were prepared for the job! Our week involved many practices and ensuring our artwork was completed for the assembly. We hope that you were able to make it to watch and Remember. If you weren't able to join us, we can show you what our beautiful art looks like!

In addition to our practices and artwork, we also prepared for the day by learning about World War I, World War II, the Depression, and the Boom years! We even had a special guest speaker come in to speak with us about peace and teamwork. His name was Ordinal Seaman Matha and he was a Navy Marine with the Canadian Armed Forces. He talked about how his job is not to go to war, but to help keep peace. He compared his job to being similar to keeping the peace in the classroom. It is our job to treat each other with respect and kindness and if not, the teachers may have to step in to help out. Their role is the same. To step in and help out. He also reminded us the importance of teamwork and that if someone is hurt or struggling, it is important that we look out for one another! We enjoyed meeting Seaman Matha and hearing real-life stories from his perspective.

In Math, we continued talking about the difference between 1st hand and 2nd hand data and have started looking at different 2D shapes.

There will be a lot of memorials for Remembrance Day this weekend, so if you are looking for something fun to do with your family on the holiday Monday, it's worth checking out the following link:

Scary Homework and Halloween Happenings...

Another busy week has flown by in Room 8 and 9! We started off the week researching our Canadian region to help prepare for our project. Many are interested in learning what kinds of things can be seen in their region.

We also did a Math basic fact baseline assessment. This means we assess how we are currently doing with our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basic facts. This gives the teachers an idea of how well we know our facts, as well as giving us an idea of how much practice we need. With practice at home, and work at school, we will do this assessment later in the year so we can see how much we've improved! Parents, we brought them home last week with to other assessments to show you how we're doing!

Throughout the week, we continued working on our Remembrance Day artwork, but we won't reveal our progress yet! We have been enjoying working with watercolours for the background and will work on making some poppies to add to our work. We look forward to sharing them with you later this week. If you can join us at our Remembrance Day assembly (our two classes are hosting!) on Friday, you will get to see them there! Our assembly begins at 10:30, so come a little early to get a good spot.

Finally, we enjoyed a fun-filled day of learning on Thursday October 31st! Many came dressed in their costumes, so we loved seeing each other's creativity! We had fun counting mini-chocolate bars in a 100-bar box. We had to count how many of each flavour was in each box and then we graphed the results (ask me why this is called '1st hand information'). We were very surprised to see the varying numbers of each flavour. We shared our thoughts about why we thought this was.

Ms. Moir also read us some spooooky stories. We talked about what makes stories spooky and it seems the suggestions work. At one point Ms. Gill got in on the fun to add an element of surprise in one of the stories! After, we spent some time writing some of our own spooky stories! We look forward to sharing them with each other.

Now for the scary homework...MANY of us forgot our homework on Thursday! Most said it was because they didn't know that there wasn't any school on Friday. Ms. Moir and Ms. Gill talked about how as Grade 5's, our responsibility for our learning has increased. This is the time to learn to take on more responsibility, both at school and at home. We no longer have agendas, so Ms. Gill and Ms. Moir try to ensure expectations are clearly stated on our blog. That is like our agenda. So in addition to the school calendar, we can usually find important dates on our Upcoming Events.

By the end of the day on October 31st, Ms. Moir and Ms. Gill were exhausted from all of the excitement of the week. We managed to snap a picture of one of them below... ;)

We hope you've had a wonderful weekend and are ready for a new week ahead!
