Scary Homework and Halloween Happenings...

Another busy week has flown by in Room 8 and 9! We started off the week researching our Canadian region to help prepare for our project. Many are interested in learning what kinds of things can be seen in their region.

We also did a Math basic fact baseline assessment. This means we assess how we are currently doing with our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basic facts. This gives the teachers an idea of how well we know our facts, as well as giving us an idea of how much practice we need. With practice at home, and work at school, we will do this assessment later in the year so we can see how much we've improved! Parents, we brought them home last week with to other assessments to show you how we're doing!

Throughout the week, we continued working on our Remembrance Day artwork, but we won't reveal our progress yet! We have been enjoying working with watercolours for the background and will work on making some poppies to add to our work. We look forward to sharing them with you later this week. If you can join us at our Remembrance Day assembly (our two classes are hosting!) on Friday, you will get to see them there! Our assembly begins at 10:30, so come a little early to get a good spot.

Finally, we enjoyed a fun-filled day of learning on Thursday October 31st! Many came dressed in their costumes, so we loved seeing each other's creativity! We had fun counting mini-chocolate bars in a 100-bar box. We had to count how many of each flavour was in each box and then we graphed the results (ask me why this is called '1st hand information'). We were very surprised to see the varying numbers of each flavour. We shared our thoughts about why we thought this was.

Ms. Moir also read us some spooooky stories. We talked about what makes stories spooky and it seems the suggestions work. At one point Ms. Gill got in on the fun to add an element of surprise in one of the stories! After, we spent some time writing some of our own spooky stories! We look forward to sharing them with each other.

Now for the scary homework...MANY of us forgot our homework on Thursday! Most said it was because they didn't know that there wasn't any school on Friday. Ms. Moir and Ms. Gill talked about how as Grade 5's, our responsibility for our learning has increased. This is the time to learn to take on more responsibility, both at school and at home. We no longer have agendas, so Ms. Gill and Ms. Moir try to ensure expectations are clearly stated on our blog. That is like our agenda. So in addition to the school calendar, we can usually find important dates on our Upcoming Events.

By the end of the day on October 31st, Ms. Moir and Ms. Gill were exhausted from all of the excitement of the week. We managed to snap a picture of one of them below... ;)

We hope you've had a wonderful weekend and are ready for a new week ahead!
