Friday September 27

We had a lot of fun this week in Grade 5!

We were asked to put forth some names for our wonderful outdoor space and the school would vote. We read the story 'The Gardener', which is about a young girl who moves from the country into the city and misses the connection with nature. So, she decides to plant flowers all over the rooftop patio and the space that she created was beautiful...just like ours! Once we read the story, it inspired us to name our beautiful space. The two ideas we came up with were 'Nature's Secret Kingdom' and 'Elements of Peace'. We can't wait to find out what some of the others were as well.

This week, we also had our first community walk. We walked up the hill where we sat quietly and sketched our surroundings. After that, we walked down 32nd Ave to 36 St near the LRT crossing. There, we took a moment to sketch our surroundings again. It was amazing to see the comparison between the quiet, peaceful hill and the busy streets with ringing bells and honking horns. The picked a beautiful fall day to do our walk. A nice treat before our big snowfall that is in our forecast!

This week for social studies we looked at the pros and cons of online platforms and discussed where we get our news and information from and how do we know its real.  We also reviewed the levels of government in Canada and what each level is responsible for.

We began math and students are learning about place value and the value of numbers and the ways they can show us the value through base ten blocks,  place value chart, expanded form and various equations with different operations.

NOTE:

1.) Please dress your child in appropriate fall/winter clothing. We live in Calgary and the weather is unpredictable and cold. Thursday September 19

Hello Families of Room 8 & 9,

This week began with an important lesson in having a Growth mindset vs. Fixed mindset. Here is the Ted Talk video we watched to begin our discussion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ

Kids also did a T chart about  Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset followed by reflection.

This linked in very well with our book The Little Hummingbird who definitely had a Growth mindset! Students also finished their Humming bird drawing.

We brainstormed effective and ineffective communication and ways that we can turn our ineffective communication into effective communication! We also looked at how animals communicate, including the hummingbird. Did you know that some animals have different ways of 'voting' to make decisions for the group? One example was the African Wild Dogs who decide to go on a hunt by sneezing.

Speaking of voting, we are preparing for the upcoming election by engaging in discussions about democracy in Canada. We are very lucky that we have the right to vote as a Canadian citizen. We learned about three types of decision-making: autocratic, consensus, and democratic.

We are ending off our week excited to meet our families at our open house and sharing our wonderful "home away from home" with all of you!

NOTE: Homework will becoming the first week of October.

Friday September 13

Hello Room 8 & 9 Families,

This week we finally had a gym and music and all the students were really happy about it:)
In music, they learned an indigenous Cree Song and listened to some drumming along with Mrs. Layton.

We finished up our name tags for our coat hooks, and are continuing to complete bookmarks and our time capsule. We read a Newsella article in groups of 3 and reviewed why annotating articles is important.  We started to look at supporting details within articles and our own paragraphs.

We watched a video on Terry Fox and even heard an audio recording from his brother Fred Fox. All grade 5 students wrote a letter to Terry and focused on why they would tell him or ask him if he was still alive.

We played Rainbow Logic, a strategy and communication game.

Our school theme this year is COMMUNICATION. We brainstormed what does communication means and the different forms that come to mind.

Please look at each teacher's twitter pages below to see all the cool things we do at our school and classroom.

Terry Fox Run!!!!

Terry Fox Run this Friday!!!!!

Hello Room 8 & 9 Families :)

Reminder this Friday we will have a school-wide Terry Fox Run/Walk.

Here is some information about who Terry Fox is:

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, on July 28, 1958.  He was only 21 years old when he began his Marathon of Hope in 1980.  Terry’s goal was to raise awareness and $1 from every Canadian for cancer research.  Let’s continue Terry’s goal and help raise as much money as we can at CJM this week. Remember that any amount that you can donate is appreciated.
