Elections, Authors, and Art, Oh My!

What a busy week it was!

We started off the week with a visit from our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Harder. She read us a great book and asked for our help. She 'hired' us to decorate her office. We worked hard on our art pockets and can't wait to see how she will use all of them in her space! Here are just a few of them to enjoy...

Students were very excited to discuss the election results on Tuesday and spent some time answering questions about them. Whether or not they were happy with the results, they certainly enjoyed this whole process and are looking forward to voting as soon as they turn 18!

Another highlight of our week was our visit from author, Marty Chan. Marty performed some magic, told us some stories of his childhood, and made us laugh. He reminded us to listen to our teachers when they tell us we need more detail in our writing and that we can turn any experience into a story! We will get an opportunity to order his books sometime soon!

Later in the week we had a Gratitude circle and expressed our appreciation for others. We all noticed how it felt really good to not only be told you are appreciated, but also to tell someone you appreciated them! Certainly something we should all remember to do!

We ended the week with some watercolour art to prepare for OUR upcoming Remembrance Day assembly. That's right...Rooms 8 & 9 will be hosting our Remembrance Day assembly. More details to follow!

Well, that is just a SMALL sample of what we did this past week! Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend!

Happy Diwali to all families celebrating!!!

Friday October 4th

Hello Room 8 & 9 Beautiful Families,

This week began by continuing to learn about the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day, on September 30th.

Ms. Moir read the book "Stolen Words" by Melanie Florence.  Click on the following link to see what we read: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIXg3-UKnzE
We also completed our Zentangles in honor of Orange Shirt Day.

This week we did a visual journal math page. Once Upon a number and the importance of each number to a student. We looked at the value of a digit on the place value chart. For example, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and ones. We did estimation problem-solving.  Students learned from student leaders of different strategies in Math problem-solving.

Social Studies:
We read an article about the immigration policy in the US and how it made a connect to residential schools and the message behind Orange Shirt Day " Every Child Matters".
Here is a link we looked at to discuss the reality of today's world. We only watched a minute of it due to its heavy emotional content.
We discussed how political leaders we choose have great impacts on our nation's policies and our quality of life.

Grade five students also looked at the verification of images and information. How do we research articles and images to find the truth behind them? Students discussed with each other how not everything online or on social media is the truth and some maybe misinformation, disinformation or information pollution. They learned how to check for facts.

We also began our class novel study on the book "Fatty Legs" by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. Ms. Moir read 12 pages to the students and we answered some reflection questions on the characters' emotions

Science:
Mrs. Neufled came in to teach us about weather and concepts. She taught us to look at a “SYSTEMS” concept and brainstormed "How is the sky a System?" and related it to the weather being a system along with weather patterns. Students worked on a Weather Journal Page about the season Fall and they used their five senses to describe the autumn season while trying to use descriptive words. We also did a WEATHER ATTAINMENT CONCEPT: which means students looked at three critical perspectives of weather that are common by looking at three pictures of Calgary during sunny days, rainy days and snowy days.

ART
We ended the week off with some Thanksgiving art. We had a big group discussion of what we are thankful for in our lives and what makes us HAPPY.   We also looked at the meaning behind thanksgiving.
