Hello Room 8 and 9 Families,
We hope everyone had a restful winter break.
The following is what we will be working on in the next THREE weeks:
Math:
-Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations.
-Describe and represent decimals (tenths, hundredths, thousandths), concretely, pictorially and symbolically.
-Relate decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals (to thousandths).
-Compare fractions and decimals least to greatest and vice versa.
-Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of decimals (limited to thousandths)
Science: Electricity Centers
1. SNAP
Electric Circuits
Recognize
the importance of switches and other control mechanisms to the design and
operation of electrical devices, and identify purposes of switches in
particular applications. Construct and use a variety of switches.
2. Electrical Safety
Recognize
and appreciate the potential dangers involved in using sources of electrical
currents:
- understand that household
electrical currents are potentially dangerous and not a suitable source
for experimentation
- understand that small batteries
are a relatively safe source of electricity, for experimentation and
study, but that care should be taken to avoid short circuits
- understand that short circuits may
cause wires to heat up, as well as waste the limited amount of energy in
batteries.
3. Insulators and
Conductors
Distinguish electrical
conductors-materials that allow electricity to flow through them- from
insulators-materials that do not allow electricity to flow through them. Recognize
and demonstrate that some materials, including resistors, are partial
conductors of electricity.
4. Lightbulb –Single Circuit and Parallel Circuit
Design and
construct circuits that operate lights and other electrical devices.
Demonstrate
different ways of lighting two lights from a single power source, and compare
the results. Students should recognize that wiring two bulbs in series makes
both bulbs glow less brightly than if the bulbs are wired in parallel. Students
may demonstrate this knowledge operationally and do not need to use the terms
series and parallel.
5. Magic Spoon
Electrical Charges. Positive and
Negative.
6. Remote Control Roller
Static Electricity
7. Electrical Devices
Identify
example applications of electrical devices in the school and home environment,
and classify the kinds of uses. Categories of electrical use may include such
things as: heating, lighting, communicating, moving, computing.
Social Studies:
Please review the following questions from learning about Canada's Regions:
1.
What are the environmental significance of national parks and
protected areas in Canada?
2.
Whose responsibility should it be to ensure the preservation of Canada's
national parks and protected areas?
3.
In what ways do natural resources and the physical geography of a
region determines the establishment of communities?
How does the land sustain communities and the diverse ways that people have of
living with the land?
4.
What are the major geographical regions, landforms, and bodies of
water in Canada?
5.
How do landforms, bodies of water and natural resources affect the
quality of life in Canada?
6.
What are the differences and similarities among the geographical regions
of Canada?
7.
How is the geographical region of Alberta different from other
regions of Canada?
8.
Name all regions of Canada and write one thing about each that makes them unique and special compared to other regions?
Students will also be creating a WOOL landscape for a region they like the most. After their wool is is finished will be answering questions for their region. They should know each region:
-Weather and Climate
-Natural Resources
-Quality of Life
-Major landforms and bodies of water
-National Parks
-Major cities that are important to that region
Language Arts:

We will also be focusing on current events:
Directions: Find an article either in the newspaper or online from a
newspaper source. Read the articles and respond to the article ensuring you
include answers to the questions below. Please find and read about important issues in our world
today. As this is a current events assignment you are to choose an article that is
no more than a week old. Attach the article to your response if you can, or provide website.
Please ensure you include the following details:
Title of Article
Source
WHO is this article about?
WHAT is this story about? List three important facts from
your article.
WHEN did this story take place?
WHERE is this event or issue occurring? (Specify city,
country, region, etc.)
WHY is this story important?
CONNECT the article. What does it have to do with you?
Can it be connected to anything we learned or are learning
about in class? Is this a local, Provincial or National issue?
Grading will be based on the following rubric:
4 – Entire Current Event assignment meets the following requirements for each statement above:
-
Demonstrates thoughtfulness, preparation, and accuracy.
-
Reflects real understanding of the story and the issues.
-
Follows directions.
-
Is complete, neat, and includes entire article.
-
Asks and answers a provocative (for discussion purposes) question.
3 – Current Event assignment is complete but lacks 2 of the above requirements.
2 – Current Event assignment lacks 3 of the requirements.
1 – Current Event assignment lacks 4 of the requirements.
0 – Current Event assignment is late (excepting all-day absence) or lacks 5 or more of the above
requirements.
